Summer Skin | Holistic Tips for the Sun-Soaked Season
With a background in holistic esthetics I’ve learned that summer skin care isn’t about fighting your skin. It’s about stewarding it. Listening to your body. Trusting what God built in from the beginning.
Our skin is wise. It speaks up with sunburn, dryness, oil, or breakouts when something’s out of rhythm. And in the slower, sun-soaked months of summer, we’re invited to return to simpler care and deeper trust.
Here are a few of my favorite summer skin care shifts:
Let Your Skin Breathe
Heavy creams might be too much right now. Instead go for something lighter - like a whipped tallow butter infused with cooling herbs. Our Meadowlark Made summer offering, Quiet Sunset, was crafted for this - featuring peppermint, calendula, plantain, and lemon balm to soothe and refresh skin without heaviness.
Hydrate the Way Creation Intended
The sun, heat, and humid air can dry us out. Drink water often, and don’t forget to replenish minerals too. A pinch of salt, a squeeze of lemon, or herbal infusions like hibiscus and rose all help. Skin health starts deep within the body.
Embrace the Sun with Wisdom
We were made for the sun. Morning light helps regulate our hormones and supports our immune system. But when the sun is high, cover up, rest in the shade, or apply a barrier like zinc. I often use plant oils with gentle UV support, like raspberry seed or carrot seed, and trust the balance God gave us. I follow with a thin layer of our Forest Sage or Bare Balm on cheeks and nose to protect and support the skin barrier. These gentle tallow-based balms help trap in moisture and shield the skin without synthetic ingredients.
Cleanse with Kindness
More sweat doesn’t mean more scrubbing. Harsh cleansers strip your skin’s barrier - God designed that layer for protection and healing. Stick to a gentle cleanser, or oil cleanse at night to dissolve dirt without damage. I recommend a gentle oil cleanse or a soft, nourishing bar soap that won’t strip your skin. Our tallow soaps are made the old-fashioned way with skin-loving fats and no harshness.
Tend to Your Skin After the Sun
Post-sun, your skin longs for comfort. Reach for tallow-based balms with herbs to soothe and restore. The land gives us what we need - if we’re willing to slow down and use it. After long hours outside, I reach for a balm or butter made with wild-foraged herbs to restore and calm sun-kissed skin. Our Homestead Salve, Quiet Sunset Butter, and Harmony Facial Balm are my absolute favorites for this; deeply nourishing, anti-inflammatory, and crafted with prairie-grown plants.
Bonus: Eat the Gifts of the Season
Summer food was made for summer skin. Berries, cucumbers, watermelon, and greens are full of antioxidants, hydration, and nutrients. Eating in season isn’t just good nutrition - it’s a way to align with the rhythms God wrote into creation. And while you’re at the farmers’ market, come see us! Our family farm is there with farm-fresh eggs and pork, tallow soaps and balms, and a good story or two.
Your skin was never meant to hustle; it was made to heal, to glow, and to respond to the care you give it. Every product at Meadowlark Made: A Prairie Apothecary is crafted with that truth in mind. If your summer skin is asking for something simpler and more grounding, we’d love to share what we’ve made with you.
With love,
Sydney
